Sophomore defenseman Sam Lofquist has left the Gopher hockey team and withdrawn from the University of Minnesota. After playing regularly last season as a freshman, Lofquist has missed time due to a bruised foot this season, suiting up for three of the team's eight games. The last straw, apparently, was his healthy scratch on Saturday night in Madison (Lofquist is from Somerset, WI).
For his career, the 6-2, 205 lb. defenseman netted one goal (in Madison last season) and three assists in 38 games.
The defensive corps are going to be a bit thin for the next few weeks until freshman Nick Leddy returns from a broken jaw. Saturday's victory in Madison featured the first appearance of senior Brian Schack this season, and it is likely Schack will stay in the lineup until Leddy returns. The defense has struggled all season long and surrendered a total of 79 shots at Wisconsin last weekend. Still, the team now has seven defensemen on the roster and an injury to anyone else will force coach Don Lucia to get creative.
