A Sweep Upon Which to Build?

The Gopher hockey team completed the weekend sweep against Alaska-Anchorage on Sunday evening, winning 4-1. The win gave the Gophers their first home-ice two game sweep in conference play since 2006.
Patrick White scored his first goal of the season, and it was also the Gophers' first tally on the power play all season long. Tony Lucia, Mike Hoeffel, and Jay Barriball also scored for the Gophers, while Jordan Schroeder added two assists.

Alex Kangas was given the start by coach Don Lucia in consecutive games and was spectacular. He turned aside 31 UAA shots. Many of these opportunities came at close range, as the Gopher defensive corps played extremely lax defense for the last half of the game.

Stars of the weekend included:
  • Alex Kangas - 2 GP, 2 wins, 55 shots, 53 saves (.964 GAA)
  • Tony Lucia - 3 goals
  • Jordan Schroeder - 3 assists
So, the Gophers are now 2-3-1 on the young season and take on Wisconsin at the Kohl Center next weekend. It will be a good test for the Gophers in Madison next weekend. Minny has managed to pick up a little confidence with the sweep of UAA, but Wisconsin steamrolled New Hampshire in the same building in non-conference play this weekend, out-scoring the Wildcats by a total of 10-2. Still, Bucky is only 1-2-1 in league play, and needs WCHA points just as much as do the Gophers.

A sweep of Alaska-Anchorage is usually nothing for which to get too excited. Still, for a Gopher team devoid of goal-scoring, a nine-goal weekend is something to carry into next weekend's series.
The power play is another matter - 1-29 on the season......
